There are several books released every year. But there are certain books released in 2020 that holds a special place in my heart because of its plot and the roller coaster ride that it carries you along with. The books listed below managed to bag few awards and are loved by various book bloggers including me. The books are gripping, heart wrenching and extremely emotional. Read at your own risk or you will weep throughout the day.
The pandemic urged me to read a lot of books this year. I managed to read about 64 books including review copies and few of some amazing books. I discovered some of the new budding authors who write really well. Earlier I was a bit skeptical about reading books by Indian authors as I am not a romance person. But guess what, there are some incredible Indian based authors who raised the bar of Indian literature.
Not only this, I read some books out of my comfort genre and I really liked them. So why not share them with you to save you some. I am compiling some of the best books I read and I think you all will love. So, let’s get started.
· The henna Artist by Alka Joshi
The henna artist by Alka joshi is one of my top reads of 2020. The protagonist of the book, Lakshmi elopes from her marriage to jaipur to avoid the torments of her marriage. She becomes a henna artist and flourishes in her business. One day, a girl knocks on her door who happens to be her sister she did not know about. Her life takes toll after her sister stays with her and the book is her journey through all the obstacles of her life. The story is set in the pre independence period and provides a vivid image of the society back then. The book will take you on a roller coaster of emotions and will forever remain close to your heart.
· Undertow by Jahnavi Barua
Set in Assam, Undertow is the gripping tale of a dysfunctional family and the cracks in their relationship. Jahnavi Barua considers the familial relationship in this book and succeeds in mesmerizing her readers with a heart wrenching tale of love. The vivid description of the greeneries of Assam makes the book more interesting. Her story writing needs to be applauded.
· Azadi by Arundhati Roy
Azadi by Arundhati Roy is a collection of essays of various events happening around us. The book talks about minorities, corona virus pandemic and the political scenario of India. She holds a very peculiar opinion about politics and the events happening around the world. Arundhati Roy is one of the best authors of Indian Origin.
· And the Mountains Sing by Nguyen phan
“And the mountains sing” is the story of War. The protagonist’s grandmother survived French Occupation, Japanese invasion, the great Hunger and the Land reform of the Post colonial period. The book will surely make you cry. The writer meticulously uses metaphors and idioms that make the book a very interesting read. The book highlights the various struggles of people during war and how their relationships are affected.
· The girl in white cotton by Avni doshi
The girl in the white cotton bagged a position in the booker prize list. This is the debut novel of the Indian- American based author whose story revolves around domestic fiction. It depicts the tale of a mother daughter and the dysfunctional relationship between them.
