What I Do When I Feel Like Giving Up
I am struggling today. If you’ve ever struggled to be consistent with something you care about, maybe my struggle will resonate with you too. No matter how successful you are in life and business, success doesn’t give you immunity from humanity. We all have days where we don’t want to get out of bed. But…what happens when this feeling lasts for days or weeks or months? What happens when we feel like we’ve lost purpose and we just want to give up, whether on a career or relationship?
Over the last 12 years, through creating and selling multiple companies to now working with business owners, I’ve identified the seven things you need to do when you feel like giving up.
Today, I Feel Like Giving Up
But today? Well, today I am struggling. Today, I don’t feel like writing. Today, I don’t feel like sticking to the routine. Today, I don’t feel like I have any great ideas and I don’t feel like I have enough time to make the good ideas great. Today, I feel like giving up. Here’s what I try to remind myself of when I feel like giving up…
Discomfort Is Temporary
Relative to the time in your normal day or week, nearly any habit you perform is over quickly. Your workout will be finished in an hour or two. Your report will be typed to completion by tomorrow morning. This article will be finished in just a moment.
Life is easier now than it has ever been. 300 years ago, if you didn’t kill your own food and build your own house, you would die. Today, we whine about forgetting our iPhone charger.
Maintain perspective. Your life is good and your discomfort is temporary. Step into this moment of discomfort and let it strengthen you.
You Will Never Regret Good Work Once It is Done
Often it seems that we want to work easily at work worth doing. We want our work to be helpful and respected, but we do not want to struggle through our work. We want our stomachs to be flat and our arms to be strong, but we do not want to grind through another workout. We want the final result, but not the failed attempts that precede it. We want the gold, but not the grind.
Anyone can want a gold medal. Few people want to train like an Olympian.
And yet, despite our resistance to it, I have never found myself feeling worse after the hard work was done. There have been days when it was damn hard to start, but it was always worth finishing. Sometimes, the simple act of showing up and having the courage to do the work, even in an average manner, is a victory worth celebrating.
Sometimes, we forget to stop and smell the flowers. Along those lines, we also forget to celebrate the victories our efforts have created.
Be proud of where you have come from and what you’ve achieved. There is no one person on the face of this planet that is the exact same as another human being. You are not the same as any other person, nobody is the same as you, and nobody is the same as anyone else. The world that we live in is always going to try and tell us who we should be. It seems like we can’t even turn on our phones or look on social media without immediately being swarmed by the beliefs of others telling us how to live our life. There are people who tell us that we should look a certain way, dress a certain style, or act with a certain way. But life is already hard enough without having to worry about the judgment of others, so why stress and carry the extra burden of trying to conform to the beliefs of others..
When you let go of the belief of others, and let go of the thought of perfection, you will be so much more happier in your life. A irrelevant number on the scale will never define your beauty as a person. The amount of likes that you get on Instagram does not define how beautiful you are as a being. And the number of followers or Facebook friends that you have will never define your value as a human being.
Instead, you should be proud of the person that you are already. You have accomplished so much in life, and you are going to accomplish many, many more amazing things. The most important step in being proud of who you are as a person, is by just loving yourself, and accepting your differences. Trust yourself with the decisions that you make in life, remove any negativity, focus on the positives, and just be the person that you want to be. No amount of approval from somebody else is worth dictating how you should live YOUR life.
We all get in a funk every now and again. That’s just the way we’re built. But, instead of lying on the sofa eating ice cream out of the tub and putting on your favorite sitcom, get happy!
Think back to the last time you were really thriving in your life. Think about what you were doing and make that happen again! For me, it’s music. I’ll turn up the volume, whack on the iPod and play my favorite tracks to get me buzzed. Happiness is a state of mind. Specifically, it is a state of “well-being and contentment.”
This Is Life
Life is a constant balance between giving into the ease of distraction or overcoming the pain of discipline. It is not an exaggeration to say that our lives and our identities are defined in this delicate balance. What is life, if not the sum of a hundred thousand daily battles and tiny decisions to either gut it out or give it up?
This moment when you don’t feel like doing the work? This is not a moment to be thrown away. This is not a dress rehearsal. This moment is your life as much as any other moment. Spend it in a way that will make you proud.
