Understanding Environmental Issues

Let us first understand the meaning of environment first.

Environment means the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives . The natural environment encompasses all living and non-living things occurring naturally.

It plays an important role in the healthy living of human beings. Environment matters because it is the only home that humans have, and it provides air, food and other needs.

What are the major environmental issues?

The major environmental issues which our Earth is facing are as follows-

1. Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the most complicated and crucial aspect of our planet. It refers to all the variety of life that can be found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms) as well as to the communities, that they form and the habitats in which they live.

How it becomes an environmental issue?

Loss of biodiversity has become an environmental issue because of many factors, such as habitat loss degradation, excessive nutrient load, air and water pollution, over-exploitation , unsustainable use of natural resources, and invasive species.

How can we protect biodiversity?

We can protect our biodiversity by not disturbing our ecosystem, by planting more and more trees, by not using things made from animal skin and by reducing invasive spices.

2. Water

Water is such a thing that every human being needs to live because we all know that,

If there is water

There is life.

Water is needed for digestive juices, urine and to poop and you can bet that water is the main ingredient in perspiration, also called as sweat. Besides this, being an important part of the fluids in our body, water is needed by each cell in our body to work.

How it becomes an environmental issue?

Water becomes an environmental issue because of the result of human activities. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies which includes lakes, rivers, oceans, aquafires, and groundwater. It results when contaminants are introduced into the natural environment.

How can we protect water from water pollution?

We can protect water from water pollution by not using pesticides and fertilizers more than required, this will prevent run of the material into nearby water sources, by planting more plants in garden or in our locality and also by keeping our river, lakes, oceans and beaches clean by not throwing litter into them.

3. Deforestation

Deforestation refers to the decrease in forest areas across the world. We use trees every where. Some areas where we use trees are agricultural croplands, urbanization, or mining activities. It basically means clearing a wide area of trees.

How Deforestation becomes an environmental issue?

Deforestation becomes an environmental issue because loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and a lot of problems for indigenous people.

What to do to prevent deforestation?

We can prevent deforestation by planting more and more trees, by using recycled products, by going paperless at home and in the office, by supporting the products of companies that are committed to reduce deforestation, by not using palm oil or products made with palm and by raising awareness in our community.

4. Global Warming

Global Warming means the gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans and the atmosphere and it is mainly caused by human activities. The burning of fossil fuels  pumps carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

How to protect environment from Global Warming?

We can protect our environment from global warming by following ways-

  • Power your home with renewable energy.
  • Invest in energy efficient appliances.
  • Reduce waste water.
  • Buy LED bulbs rather than other bulbs.
  • Pull the plugs when not in use.
  • Drive in a fuel efficient vehicle.

Environmental protection is the only way to protect mankind.

Hence, these are the some activities that can contribute in protecting our environment.

We all know that, it is the responsibility of every citizen to save the environment from being depleted. It is high time to take steps to protect the environment and bring positive changes in society.
