A fookin review

If you're a peaky blinders fan, then you know what I'm talking about!

*This is going to be a spoiler-free review

Peaky Blinders is a British period crime drama television series created by Steven Knight set in Birmingham, England, in 1919, several months after the end of the First World.

The series follows the exploits of the Shelby gangster family, led by the fierce Tommy Shelby, a crime boss set on moving up in the world no matter the cost.

Personal experience :

I binge-watched the whole series,5 seasons of which are available now,  in 5 days. I picked this show because it was set in 1920s England, period dramas being one of my fav genres. Naturally, I was a bit apprehensive going into it, what with the violence and the mood.

But on the 6th day I realized, I miss watching this show and guess what I did ? I went on an extensive stalk session. ( That's normal right ? )

And it has left me wanting more. In fact, I want to rewatch it so that I can appreciate the show for what it is.

I loved the different characters and their dynamics. Especially in the 5th season, my anxiety had reached peak and I was literally leaning into the laptop. Whatever the show lacks is made up for by the drama

There were many moments through the series when my hand was over my mouth or I was screaming at the screen. At one point I was so devastated that I shut the browser and decided "I'm not watching this codswallop"   But that just goes to show that the series was gripping.

Highlights of the show :

Peaky blinders is Drama extraordinaire. The show mainly focuses on the effects of world war 1 on working-class men and women, and how people deal with PTSD.

It's amazing to watch how society was in those days, their lifestyle, how the women and children were treated, how the class discrimination affected the people, etc.

Cillian's brilliant performance, as the ambitious and cunning boss Tommy Shelby is worth noting here. You cannot tell him and the role apart, that's how good he is. Every emotion is etched on his face and the audience is with him on his journey. You'll want him to succeed because ultimately they're our bad guys.

The series also showcases some powerful female figures.  It's always amazing to see such strong female representation on screen.  Helen McCrory is just fantastic in her role as Aunt Pol.

The dynamic between Tommy Shelby and his Aunt pol is worth your time

The show keeps you on your toes since the story is fresh and full of tension. I mean at times you can guess where the story is headed initially, and we come across a considerable amount of blood.

Everything from the dialogues, the costume design to the cinematography and location setting is a pure joy to watch.

Special mentions :  The fookin accent of these people has enchanted millions of viewers along with the iconic Shelby gents hairstyle! It sort of creeps up on you, the brilliance of it all.

This quarantine, go check out the underrated world of The Peaky blinders.

Warning; You might just emerge out of it with a love for the word fooking!
